I’m basically hardwired into my Macbook Air.
I haven’t turned off my computer in weeks.
I’ve been asked to shut it all off & be completely computer-free for 24 Hours. At first I laughed. It’s only 24 hours. Why the build up?
For National Theft Awareness Month, Absolute LoJack is campaigning for their persistent “software as a service” (SAAS) that installs itself at the lowest possible hardware level of your Windows or Mac laptop. Absolute Software has a 24/7 Recovery Team just waiting for your laptop to get stolen, taken across country, and then recovered by their agencies in over 108 countries. Okay, not really waiting around; but they’ll check up on your laptop once a month to make sure it’s still working right. If you’re laptop got stolen, they’d be there. In a manner of seconds your computer could be stolen, wiped clean, and gone forever. Even if you get it back, there’s no guarantee your data will even be reachable.
Could You Live Without Your Data?
I’ve gone a whole university semester abroad using the iPhone 4 as my main computer. I’ve gone weeks with a notepad and a pen. I could do 24 Hours surrounded by awesome people not touching a single device. But could you? The responses were priceless. And my favorite: The more I thought about doing the challenge. The more I realized I didn’t care about my laptop or its features. I cared about the data it held inside.
Device Theft Is More Common Than You Believe
High schoolers are the most prominent smartphone target. 39% of people were texting when their phone was taken. Thirty-Nine Percent of people were holding their phones when they were taken.
Public Transit is the most common place to get a phone stolen; but the #1 Theft Location is a Public School. Colleges and Universities are #5.
Device theft increased by 67% between 2012 to 2013. According to Absolute LoJack’s data, $36M Collateral Damages represents the devices they’ve protected, recovered, and/or guaranteed. This is a fraction of the total cost of stolen devices worldwide.
How Protective Are You?
Honestly, I leave my laptop everywhere. I lay my head down over it, unplugged, and nap on it after a long day. I cover it with a scarf or a coat to go to the restroom in cafes. I ask the stranger sitting next to me to watch it while I order food. I’m amazed that it works after the accidental (and almost inevitable) coffee spill. Coffee spills.
[pullquote]”It took less than sixty days for them to track down my computer even after the thieves had wiped the hard drive and sold it to someone else.”-Absolute LoJack Student [/pullquote]Honestly, none of you have Absolute LoJack yet. If you do, please please tweet me about this post! Let’s hear about your experience with Absolute LoJack!
There’s a Back To School Saftey Quiz at the bottom of this post. Take it! Since, I’m assuming that you don’t have it, you’ll have to answer some questions dishonestly–unless they’ve finally put the honest “I didn’t even know that was an option” answer. It made me realize that I literally spend 70 hours a week on my computer; and I don’t even protect it? Thankfully, you don’t have to worry.
